SERA-47 Hosts 2021 Local & Regional Foods Annual Meeting
The Southern Extension and Research Activity 47 (SERA-47) Local & Regional Foods annual meeting allows Extension and research colleagues in the Southern region to come and share the great work they are doing related to local foods and to explore how it might be expanded throughout the region. The goal is to foster networking in an effort to strengthen research and outreach collaboration across the region.
Building upon previous goals, three objectives for the renewed efforts were identified:
1. Increase interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations and networking efforts among Extension and research food system professionals across the region.
2. Identify current and emerging issues specific to food system development in the Southern region.
3. Assess local food system policy, opportunities for expansion, environmental change, and economic development issues, make policy recommendations, and develop best practices for communities across the region.

North Carolina Develops Video Series: Preparedness and Partnerships - Key Actions to Mitigate the Impact of Disaster and Emergencies
Did you know that disasters can happen anytime, anywhere, and when you least expect them? Think about the Coronavirus pandemic… how prepared were you?
This is the starting point of the series of bilingual videos on Preparing for Natural Disasters or Emergencies. These videos were inspired by the fact that we are often caught by surprise when disasters hit. They seek to connect the public with the importance of knowing what to do before, during, and after a disaster or emergency.
The video series was created to increase awareness of the importance of being prepared, promote specific actions/ideas to help people be prepared, and recognize communities’ needs and strengths to respond prior, during and after a disaster. They also aim to provide organizations and programs an evidence-based educational tool to promote dialogue and engagement on disaster and emergency preparedness.
The videos were designed with the Latinx Community in mind. However, they can be used by any person and/or group seeking resources to get started on the journey of Emergency and Disaster Preparedness and Response.
The topics of the videos included in the series are:
- Introductory video, importance of being prepared, family planning in case of natural disasters or emergencies, being aware of, and responding to, alerts for natural disasters or emergencies
- Having a family emergency kit, and having a financial emergency kit
The creation of these videos also represents an example of a successful partnership and collaboration. The videos were developed through the collaborative partnership of Cintia Aguilar from North Carolina State Extension, Daniela Archibold from the Church World Service, and Esmeralda Dominquez from the Episcopal Farm Worker Ministry.
The videos are free to use as an educational tool by a program, agency, educator, or community leader. The development team centered the content around cultural competency and adapted the materials to be understood in different Latinx cultures from Central and South America. The videos can be adopted and/or adapted but original branding, resources, and content cannot be modified.
